13 Reasons Why (Season 1) | TV Show Review

I love it when they make books into movies or shows. I prefer shows because you are able to get more into it but they both have their pros and cons. I read this book a few years ago, when I was in 8th grade since my English Teacher recommended it. We were reading a lot of books that dealt with this topic: SUICIDE. I didn’t know at the time that the book was becoming a show but I finally watched it. Wow is what I have to say about this show. WOW. If you haven’t seen the show and don’t want to be spoiled, beware of what you might read!

My Review:

Wow is what I have to say about this show. This show was perfectly planned out and had such a great message within it. I read the book (of course) so I knew what was going to happen in the end but I still was still on the edge of my seat while I was watching this show. Let’s just get into some more detail with what I am talking about!

Selena Gomez was originally supposed to play Hannah Baker but I’m secretly sort of happy that she wasn’t. I feel like the actress they had play her was so much better. Don’t get this wrong, I love Selena, but I feel like she is a little too nice. But Selena was still in the whole set up of this show and I was so happy. She had a song that she recorded playing in the last episode and it fit perfectly in with the show.

This cast was pretty good looking if I said so myself. Can we talk about how hot some of this cast was; Zach, Clay, Justin, Tony, and even Alex. (Alex might have been my little crush through the whole show.) The girls weren’t that bad looking either. But this cast was so close and they played along with the plot of the show perfect. They knew when to hate a certain character and they knew how to love a certain character at certain times. The cast had a great relationship and they had a great work ethic that I don’t know that many cast really had. Plus, Selena Gomez was on set and what would have been better?

If you aren’t familiar with the show or the book, it follows this girl named Hannah. Hannah Baker. Hannah Baker has killed herself and no one supposedly saw it coming. Now Hannah is back and she is revealing 13 reasons why she killed herself. She has came up with the idea that she will make these cassette tapes and let these 13 people (it’s actually 12) know why they caused her to kill herself. The tapes get to Clay Jensen. Clay thought that he was nothing but nice to her. But now he is a reason that she killed herself? As Clay listens to his tapes, the more and more he starts to question the people around him and Hannah.

If a person wasn’t familiar with the whole plot of the book or know doesn’t know what to expect, there can possibly be some graphic or violent scenes within the book. The whole thing deals with the topic of suicide since Hannah Baker slit her wrist but it also deals with rape and feeling along out in the world. The show actually does show Hannah slitting her wrist in the bathroom so you might want to prepare yourself for that in the show. It also shows how Jessica AND Hannah were raped by Bryce through the whole season. Clay begins to feel like the world is against him and he doesn’t know what to think about the whole thing. Drugs, sex, bullying, and alcohol are also a factor within this show.

This show was shot in a manner that I greatly appreciate. The show goes back and forth between several storylines – all the people that want to shut Clay up, Hannah aka the Tapes, and also Clay. But it is in a manner that you really won’t mind. There are parts of the show that I liked a lot better than the book and there were things that I wished they got right about the whole thing. The show brought in such a great writer for the show that they really brought out the emotion and it felt like you really knew Hannah right before she died. You want to punch some of the characters in the head or just kill them after you heard their tapes.

Such a great way to bring out such a great message. Through the show, you learn what bullying can really do to a person and why so many people might want to commit suicide. If you really know that someone is suffering, make sure that you get them the help they need and make sure you let them know that you are truly there for them. Hannah suffered through bullying which caused her to kill herself. It wasn’t all because of bullying but that was the main reason behind it all.

Overall, I would have to give this show a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Such a powerful storyline behind the whole thing and everyone has something to learn from it. Like I said earlier, there are some graphic and strong topics through the whole show so if you are easily triggered, you should probably wait on this show. You should be noted about some of the strong language used within the show as well, which might bother some people as well. Other than that, I would recommend that you all (if you have Netflix) to go and check out this show. You will regret it if you don’t. And don’t feel like you have to be a teenager to check it out because everyone will be able to enjoy the show.

Have you watched this show? What were your thoughts about it? Who was your favorite character? Do you believe that Hannah Baker is dead? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Happy Reading,

  1. I had read the book before watching the show and I thought the show did a pretty good job of handling the book especially when it deals with sensitive and serious topics.
Now when it comes down to the actual topic of suicide, there are different views on it.
But that doesn’t take away from the work put into the show by the team.
U said Selena Gomez was supposed to play Hannah. Well, even I’m glad she didn’t bcoz the actress who played Hannah did an outstanding job.
I liked Jessica’s character. Is that good? 🤔

    1. Jessica was a pretty good character. Don’t worry, you are not alone on that. The actress that played Hannah, Katherine Langford, did such a great job on Hannah’s role. If Selena Gomez was going to play Hannah, I felt like the whole show would be different. I’m just interested in knowing what the show is going to do for a second season. How the show ended left me with questions but I really want to know what is going to happen with the characters.
